The Story Behind The Game
Making Learning Fun
After years of forcing our kids to clean, we decided take a different approach: to make house cleaning chores a game. Not a video game but a tangible card game kids could hold in their hands.
So we created a prototype. Just like trading baseball cards in primary school, our kids could trade chores until they were happy knowing what chore they have to do. A physical card also made it hard to get out of a chore—either the card is done or it isn't.
By turning cleaning a game for the whole family, The Cleaning Game Card Deck encourages teamwork, clarity of purpose, and discipline. We've used this deck for years and hope you will find just as much use out of it as we have!
Frequently Asked Questions
Common Questions
What age group is this best for?
Ages 5–12 work best, though teens have been known to jump in, especially if they have younger siblings to set an example for.
How long does a “game” take?
5-10 minutes to deal the cards to tell who does what. After that, it's completely up to you how long it takes to clean the house!
Do I need special supplies?
Nope! You only need your normal cleaning tools: broom, sponge, vacuum, etc.
Will this actually keep kids motivated?
Yes! The point system and timed scorecards make chores feel like a race. Plus, kids are competing against themselves, the only kind of competition worth tracking.
Is this a replacement for allowance or chores?
This game is only a helpful tool, not a replacement for other incentives. Use The Cleaning Game to cut down complaining and get more things cleaned faster.
What if my kids refuse to play the game?
Hey—you’re still the parent! If you get resistance, just ask them to play for 30 days. We feel that once they see it can be fun and reward consistency, most kids will want to play again.
Durability
High Quality
The makers of The Cleaning Game card deck are artists specializing in premium art installations so we know how to make great products that last. No detail is too small for us to improve our products!
Relatable
Made by Parents
Designed for parents by parents. We know how hard it can be to incentivize kids to do the scut work. So why not make it as fun as possible? Plus, we are huge gamers so we know a thing or two about how to make a good game.
Flexible
Play Your Way
We have suggestions on how to use the card deck, but the only rule is—do what works best for your family. Keep trying new approaches (or maybe a different approach each time?) until something clicks.
This is for you if...
OMG no more nagging!
You’re tired of nagging and want a better way. I mean, why must parents always be the bad guy? Wouldn't it so much easier if parents could just once be the hero that comes back from an epic quest to help the village?
Less time, more cleaning
You’d love chores to take less time and fewer battles. Don't you feel like you spend more time explaining the need to clean the house... rather than actually cleaning the house?
Give your kids what they want.
Your kids love games but hate chores. Our goal is to make them look forward to the next time you have to cle—uh, play the game. :)
Live (and clean) in peace.
You want family life to feel calmer and more cooperative. The Cleaning Game isn't meant as a competition between family members, but to clearly define what everyone's job is so they can do with without arguing.
Build lifelong habits.
You believe chores can actually build confidence and responsibility. We feel chores are the backbone of good character, but the lesson is that difficult work need not be boring work, either.
This is NOT for you if...
You want a quick fix.
You expect a magic wand—this still requires parenting. You can't just buy this game and expect the kids to enjoy it—you have to lead them and enjoy the game alongside them.
Hard work... should be hard?
You don’t like the idea of chores being “fun.” Sure, some stuff can't really be made fun, but kids don't always get that. They are more likely to do chores if they can enjoy it, and if you disagree, we don't think this deck is for you.
Just get a cleaning lady already!
You want to outsource cleaning entirely. We've done this sometimes, but we think a cleaning lady robs our kids of the value of having a clean house.
Chores are NOT games.
You dislike point systems or gamification in general. Well, we can't help you with that.
"Just do it."
You’re looking for a one-time bribe instead of a lasting habit. Parenting is a marathon calling to up your own game... short-term fixes will fail 100% in the long-run.
